Working with type

Typography is one of the cornerstones of graphic design. During tonight's class, you'll start to work with type, and begin learning how to manipulate it. Manipulating type is a great way to create a work of art without having to use a separate graphic. Check out the Stormtrooper (to your left) and see that it was made using ONLY type! Isn't that cool? You can totally draw a picture using type!

Tonight you'll be using Adobe Illustrator to create your type. You'll first learn about the type tool and then learn how to modify your type using the character panel. You'll also learn how to create non-printing guides to better help you align your type on the page. You'll set some body copy and then go on to learn how to convert your type to outlines to make it an editable shape. All of this is covered in Chapter 4 of your textbook (pp 53-66.)

I want you to go through the entire chapter in class. You'll turn in your document at the end of class. Please save it as a .pdf and use the filename format: lastname_grid.pdf

HOMEWORK:
• Sketch 10 different ideas of a picture made using only type. Then, I want to see FIVE more drawings that have been refined into highly detailed sketches.
• Sketches will be due to turn in at the beginning of class on Monday.
